Adding a little dimension

August 19th, 2009

When I started scrapbooking I was all about clean lines and kept my layouts pretty flat. Strangely enough, it was when I started digital scrapbooking that I got interested in adding more dimension to my layouts – probably in an effort to make them look more real, or paper like. This has drifted back to my paper scrapping — now I like to have  a a bit more dimension in my layouts (not too much!) and I’m going to share a few of my methods here.

Take this layout for example:

I added dimension in a few different ways. I printed out my photos using a digital photo cluster frame (by Katie Pertiet) and used 3M Mounting Tape to adhere them. This raises the photos up from the background papers.

The Sassafras Whimsey flowers take folding very well and I creased, folded and manipulated them to lift them from the background. When adding the centers to the flowers I used 3M foam squares to add additional depth.

I also spritzed and crumpled up a strip of the Jenni Bowlin paper to add texture – ripping the end to add even more texture. The tickets were also raised using 3M mounting tape.

This could have been a flat layout but using different adhesives and manipulating the papers I was able to add lots of depth and therefore interest to the layout. I hope this gives you some ideas to play with!

Making cards from scraps

August 17th, 2009

Whenever I get new scrappin’ goodies in the mail, the first thing I start working on (naturally) is layouts. Then I find myself with a bunch of leftover scraps. Now, I do have a scrap stash where all of those little bits and pieces go (can’t throw them away!). But what I’ve been doing lately is keeping those scraps out and immediately using them up by creating a few quick and easy cards. We can all use cards, right?? In fact, I don’t think I’ve purchased a greeting card in over 3 years. Why buy one when you can create a handmade card?

So here’s a few examples of using some of your leftover kit scraps…and stretching your supplies just a little bit further!

In this first one I simple took several strips of patterned paper, added some stitching, buttons, ribbon, & a stamped sentiment and it’s done!

This next one I pulled out one of my favorite heart punches. I popped one of the hearts up with a foam dot and added a little button and a stamped sentiment at the bottom.

Quick and easy cards and you’ve used up all of your scraps. And the great thing about using supplies from your kit is that you know everything is going to go well together!

Stretch your Benjamin’s (or in this economy- your Roosevelt’s)

August 14th, 2009

In this crazy economy I’m always looking for a way to stretch my scrappy dollar. My two favorite things to do is use my paper scraps and my tools.

I often fall head-over-heels for patterned paper. Once I take the plunge and cut into it I like to use every little scrap I can. Pair that with my soft spot for circles and I’m in heaven. I love the motion they create on a layout. What I love even more is stretching my tools to the limit! Nothing makes me harbor regret like seeing an unused tool gathering dust.

I often find myself reaching for my circle punches. On this layout I used three punches :  2”, 1 ½” and 1 ¼”. I created the circular rings by punching a 1 ¼” circle and then punching a 1 ½” one around the negative.  I also used the punched out circles as a stencil. I simply traced around them to use as a guide for my hand stitching.

Grab those scraps and punches and get to work!

Easy Flower Tutorial

August 12th, 2009

Hi everyone! This time, it’s me, Sarah. This is my first post for Kraft Girl Kits, so bare with me! I promise I won’t ramble on and on (I tend to do that). :)

Today, I wanted to share with all of you how to create a flower embellishment that I have used on some of my recent layouts. On one of my recent layouts using the August kit, I created the following flower:

So you want to create this?! Well, it’s really simple. Let me show you how.

1. Draw a spiral any size you desire on any paper you choose (preferably paper from a Kraft Girl Kit, of course, hehe :) ).

2. Follow the spiral line and start cutting away.

3. Once you cut to the end of the line, you can cut the spiral piece of paper from the rest of the piece of paper. It should now look like this:

Did you get it?! Does it look like this?! …okay, great! Let’s go on.

4. Take the end of the spiral paper (not the center end), and start to roll it up. Some of you may know this term as “quilling”.

5. Continue to roll until the end. Once you get to the center, your paper should now look like this:

Ta-da! You’re all done! How’d you do?! If you need any help with this, either email us or leave a comment for one of us Kraft Girls, and we’d be happy to help you out! :)

…and as always, don’t forget to upload your KGK layouts and projects to our gallery. We’d love to see your creations!

Until next time…

Hugs,

sarah.
